Too Hot
Hot, humid smothering weather...
Why is that cricket chirping?
We all go from air conditioning to oven.
What could this be doing to our insides?
I turn away and think of the dark forest,
a dense thicket of greenery
concealing a spring-fed pool,
rocks covered in green moss,
air as cool as the first night of autumn.
I love the sun and summer.
As a boy I knew the heat and humidity intimately.
We slept all night in each other’s embrace.
Now we have only contempt for one another.
