Rapture

When I need to take all the complexity
of this moment,
of my life,
of this world,
and distill it into one simple word,
I speak, “God.”

God understands.
God comprehends what I cannot.
God loves where I will not.
God breathes for me when I hold my breath.

I speak, “God,”
until my heart breaks open and the love pours out.
I pray, “God,”
until the courage to face this world moves my body.
I sing, “God,”
until the beautiful song reveals my beauty.

God is the sun’s fire.
God is the gale winds.
God is water for the fish.
God is the gravel beneath my feet.

God is all that I am,
all I do not know.
