Velvet Morning
I woke this morning mistaking the street lights for the blaze of early dawn. Then I heard the voice of a new day calling me with this to say, “Try to consume less and also produce less for others to consume.” Now the sun is coming up and after sipping strong black tea I’ve had ample time to ponder how I might take these words much deeper into my being. I look out the window noticing how the morning light makes the trees glow a yellow-green. Back and forth flit fiery red cardinals, too many for me to possibly count. Here I discover an unexpected peace in a moment asking nothing of me, as I demand nothing from it.
