Suicide Wars

No one truly returns from war.
So let’s stop deceiving ourselves,
taking note of what we actually see
and what we know experientially
through the inevitability
of our own death.

Nothing is more frightening
than the end of everything
we know and hold dear.
The loneliness of a world
without our familiar things,
terrifies the rich and powerful much more
than the poor and surrendered.

Isn’t it well past the time
to end all wars?
But the engines of business
cannot let go of the profits
from building tanks and bombs
which finance bomb shelters.

The contradictions must be too obvious
and the fears too primal
to convince those at the levers of power
to confront their madness.

Luckily death takes no favor
and invincibly conquers
even the most hardened hearts.
