The Fair Life
The shortest day of the year has come round.
It is dark and gloomy and devoid of sound.
I look out the window that faces the east,
checking ever-so-often for my personal beast.
My mind, so weary, moves neither here nor there,
and my morning eyes are transfixed in a stare.
“Lonely,” I hear whispered on a far-off tide,
and I see fate grinning, as if me to chide.
What happened last night: good or bad?
In the dark of ignorance I am utterly sad.
Worry not, I say, drop all your cares,
you know very well life is not always fair.
