Silence

Sometimes it’s better.

Some days,
not often
but often enough,
I want to scream,
sending my voice
echoing down corridors,
bouncing off canyons,
breaking through clouds,
then shattering windows.

What I call a scream
may actually be a cry,
a big exhale,
along with the release
of tension and anguish
from great depths
only God knows.

If I cannot scream
and I cannot cry,
my soul will settle
for the silence
which always comes
before and after.
