Precious Stillness
Sitting in the dark
reading about death and resurrection.
I’m given pause
as I think
of my own biological imperatives,
of the women I’ve known desperate for a baby.
Is this really life yearning for life?
Or is it a general desire to truly be alive,
human beings in a modern world,
desperate for authenticity,
searching in all the wrong places.
My gift
to have traveled far
has brought me only inches closer to the truth.
My learning, formal and informal
are all hints, cosmic guideposts
pointing to the present moment,
the precious stillness.
Alone in the dark,
the rattling of the heater,
outside it’s 18 degrees.
Inside I am warm.
I surrender to my life.
