Passages
What time is it?
I ask frequently,
almost immediately
as I emerge from sleep.
I am truly sorry
if I have wielded time
like a bludgeon.
The more experience I accumulate
the past comes into perspective.
And with this articulation
I fill with dread.
What happened to my youth?
Such questions seem trivial,
quaint reminders of eighteenth century enlightenment,
or that guy you sat next to at a bar.
But this is big shit,
fucking, death and infinity.
It all fits equally well
into a pint glass, or the Grand Canyon.
Redemption a bit of gravel in your shoe.
The sun and shadows
are my favorite representations of time,
the displacement of light and dark on
all manner of shapes and surfaces.
This is my life.
In this one last moment
before the next,
I add my humble reverence
to the appreciation life has for itself.
