No Easy Answers

Are you the answerman
or the answerwoman?
Are there things you know,
and truly know,
so that others who know you
come to know them too?

No doubt as your knowing grew
so too did your reputation,
and your appetite,
and your ignorance,
and your impatience,
until one day all of it
became a burdensome feast.

All this and more,
before that moment happened
when you knew nothing,
and nothing you knew
was of any help.
So you felt helpless,
undone by your ignorance,
this unfamiliar not-knowing,
an unexplored darkness;
that dark night with no moon,
and so chilly too.

Being desperately lost
is often all it takes
to be undone,
so that when the light returns
nothing will be more certain
than your uncertainty,
and you no longer have easy answers
for anyone-
least of all yourself.
