Never-Ending Journey
So much whooshin’ through my head.
Like the two beautiful women,
both of ’em my age
at the party last night.
Both of ’em with somebody else.
The one folksy from rural Indiana:
she’s got deep eyes and a tattoo.
Something tells me she’s flirted with death.
I like her boyfriend.
The other has heard of me,
knows my nickname,
seems to like me already,
her husband legendary, blue collar,
salt of the earth, not meant for a suit.
She looks to me like a politician’s wife.
I feel an empty yearning,
I want, I need, I feel
in no particular order.
I thought my salvation was a woman.
Drunk Rick asks me soberly,
“Is this your first time going through this?”
He’s had more than his share.
I’m embarrassed to admit it.
Drunk Rick knows what I know.
The pain is the only real thing.
My ex has buried me.
Reality doesn’t get any more stark
unless you add blood.
I’m hitting the road to let go
(some more).
It’s a warm 29F.
Your life is this journey.
