For Griffin
Sometimes I’ve got to be just what I am. Today I’m grief-stricken, and there’s a shallowness to my breathing, accompanied by a sour stomach and a worn out, weathered-feeling from all the tears, thick and salty, running down my face. I feel hollow— like something’s missing. And that something is the embodiment of my potential for unconditional love along with limitless patience. I’m grieving for Griffin, my little black dog, come so lately, now gone too soon. He was so precious to me and to untold others as well. I fear Griffin’s light and love will be lost in my world. But of course this isn’t true. Of the many gifts Griffin gave to me, easily the most important is tangible proof of my own ability to love with abundance, and to greet each new day with a passion and exuberance equal to the weight of my being. Of course Griffin would forgive me for being turned inside out, and for feeling upside down without him. Yet he wouldn’t tolerate this for long. I can hear him saying, Let’s go outside to see what God has in store for us today!
