Expectations
Don’t lean on expectations.
There is nothing solid about them.
They are the product of personal experience,
superimposed from within and without.
Remember the certainty of youth,
the glory and strength of being,
when expectation was nothing more
than turning a page each night,
and every day celebrating the noon.
Now the day grows long.
Certainty has shrunk into something
which fits easily in a pocket.
Even as the expectations become naked,
prayer arrives effortlessly,
to fill the space between
knowing and being.
