Autumn Reckoning

The autumn means many things
way up here in the North.
It’s a time of reckoning
as our land turns away from the sun.
This is when we take account
after reaping a grateful harvest.
There’s always enough left over,
except for the greedy,
who justify their taking more
by an insatiable need to survive
through their own internal,
eternal winter.

Now a toast and a prayer of patience
for all those who wish to extend
the fierce chill of the weather!

Even they cannot stop the Earth
from again tilting toward the sun,
in our enduring desire for a new Summer.
