When Your Heart is Broken
When your heart is broken there is little you can do and even less you should do except wait. Wait until the sting is less like a knife in your side and more just a slap in the face. Wait until rational thought returns and you would no longer scorch the Earth to show just one person your pain. When your heart is broken and you wait, and you wait, and you wait, until the waiting is all there is; then the ordeal that brought you to this point becomes sacred, even mystical in its power to inform your world anew. So now you see with new eyes. You hear with new ears. Touched by the grace of God you might ask yourself, “Is this the end?” Just about the time you’ve made peace with life the phone will ring. On the other end is your friend, and you hear the familiar story - heartbreak all over again. This time someone else, but the same old bitter dish. Again there is nothing you can do. So you listen, share bits and pieces of your own heartbreak, maybe even offer a few assurances and an invitation into sacred space. Thus begins a new chapter in your own saga - this one called forgiveness.
