The Child

The child,
who will and must
destroy your kingdom,
was conceived and born
while you were unaware
and so certain
of your own immortality.

Even had you known
there is nothing to distract
those lively and conniving spirits
from their essential task,
which is to bring your soul
into union with God.

So this child was born
and just now you are waking
to see the sun rising
in the deep blue summer sky.

These days will come and go
until one afternoon
the child will arrive
to take you far away.

But don’t wait for the child
to darken your door.
Open your heart
and invite in your death.
