Springfield
Springfield, Missouri
or thereabouts,
dawn is still a couple hours off.
I wake in my rental car,
my first night at a KOA.
It was chilly,
still not too cold.
A sleeping bag and my cap
worked well to keep me warm
on a crystal January night.
In the distance red lights flash
delineate the smokestacks of a power plant.
Every hour a train horn shatters the silence
as a two-hundred-ton diesel thunders past.
Neither can drown out the stars.
I am lonely, not alone.
This part of my journey,
at times eerily quiet,
is abundant with life, with love,
as I travel with my higher power.
