My Strange Awakening

What am I doing here?

When I close my eyes,
then cross over
to worlds unimaginable,
I awake somewhere else
and say to myself,
We are all far from home.

Later I walk to a window
looking out on a crowded street
and suddenly I realize
everyone must be a drunkard,
just stumbling along
through time and place
in various stages of sleep.

My strange awakening
may be nothing more
than another stage of sleep.
It does not matter
so long as my heart has hands
to embrace everything
with the faith it all belongs.
