Millenia

The sun, wind and rain
are the slow sculptors
of the millennia.
You and I will be chiseled
more quickly,
and in a medium
no less than stone.

The wisdom of a mountain
is forged in the fires
of geological time,
then pushed up through the sea
and into the stinging air,
where it may rest for ages
before the wind grinds it into dust.

You and I rise rapidly,
compelled by the lust
of flesh for our flesh.
No mountain stands so suddenly,
as we do to face each day.
Nor does it lay down
tenderly with the night.
