Men and Their Feelings

To all the men I say,
Go ahead and tell me what you’re feeling.
And as you’d expect,
I get a lot of blank stares.
Some of them might also be panicked,
while a few wiseacres will make a joke,
so well-aware a laughing man
is rarely throwing punches.

I know, I know.
It’s a dirty trick to ask a man his feelings.
The spectacle of a helpless, befuddled man
is pathetic and makes his mother cry,
as she can only see her little boy.

When I do sit with other men,
in the naked vulnerability of our feelings,
I can see how easily I turn
all of my emotions into anger.

Am I sad?
Nope, it’s just anger.
Am I afraid?
Nope again, just angry.

I once heard a woman describe
how upsetting it is for her
to see a grown man cry.
I only wish she knew,
how badly men needed to do so.
