Mariscal

This mine is exhausted,
but the mercury-tainted air
still blows from the mineshaft.

What is the source
of this foul-smelling stuff
arising from deep below,
poisoning the land around us?

I avoid abandoned mines
like I avoid windy old men
who think their war stories
are even remotely interesting.

I prefer those actively digging
through the light and dark.
They create new wells
full of sweet water.
