Love Will Be the Prophet
She sleeps, while I’ve been dreaming. The dogs are always nearby, and I watch one of them limp to the water bowl. Outside I hear a cricket, resisting the rising sun. Life doesn’t get any more mystical. The dogs and I simply are, and the unseen makes itself known in the fragile silence. I interrupt the peace to think about romantic love, about how to keep a fire hot when the fuel begins to dwindle. Over and again, my intuition says not to worry. You are not the fire-keeper. It’s too big a job for any one person. I like to think the promise to marry opens a door to eternal love, but then I shake myself, remembering the doorways to love are everywhere and unlocked. My struggle is so simple. I’m trying to see this world inside of my limited perspective. All the while, the joy and challenge of loving her, of loving all things, is revealing a universe beyond my comprehension. I cannot tell you anything, any longer with any certainty. The poet’s job is to relate and to share what other poets have learned in their own mystical travels. So I say, move closer to God, and closer still. Your love will be the prophet offering you an intimate audience with the Creator.
