Friday Poem
I do hope this is the right poem
to come out of me this morning,
or at the very least
the one you’d want to read.
This is my Friday poem,
written for the day of the week
with added meaning.
It’s the end of one thing
and the beginning of another.
Once, not so long ago,
there were no days of the week,
nor even months of the year.
Our senses and intuition set the agenda.
There were things to be done in the day,
and tasks best reserved for the night.
Often there was little more to do
but to sit and wait.
No Fridays meant no time clocks.
Every hour could be Happy Hour.
Many people knew the moon and stars
even better than they knew the sun.
Both love-making and supper
had no formal time or place.
Through careful observation
of the sky and weather,
a pattern was detected.
Someone compiled detailed notes,
and we began naming things,
calling this day Friday.
