Food & Drink
I eat
hoping for some consolation,
hoping to fill the empty parts,
hoping to assuage my longing,
hoping to find something
which tastes better
than this bitter moment.
I drink to stay awake,
seldom to forget.
No matter what’s in the glass,
it’s never powerful enough
to appease the demons for very long.
Food and drink are too easy—
too easy for me to find,
too easy for me to take for granted,
too easy for me to deny others,
too easy to satisfy
my real hunger and thirst.
