Emptying

Takin’ out the garbage.

In my sleep
I heard the word emptying.
It came to me as I rode
those strong currents between
consciousness and dream,
unable to fully distinguish
one from the other.

As dawn approached,
I let go of my resistance
and slipped more deeply
into the peaceful sleep
called letting go.

Now awake,
I can still hear that voice
reminding me these middle years
are for emptying myself.
