My heart and mind attach this morning to my mother’s existential sadness and my desire to eliminate it. There are countless ways to frame my wish, most of them burnishing a son’s motives. Still I am awake and clear. I have grown sober through my own sorrow, which has made me realize I have no business meddling with feelings. My mother’s pain preceded me; it may have even led her down the path in which I came to be.
