Darkness

Please show us the light.

I feel far removed
from my distant ancestors
who first set foot
on this wild continent
while following the herd
across an ice sheet,
or while fleeing the heavy hand
of a merciless monarch.

What,
if anything,
does it all mean now,
as I struggle to plow
the rough fields of my being
into the fertile soil
called soulfulness?

There are many places
where the beasts yet roam
and the powerful play with us
like pawns and puppets,
oblivious to the darkness
now driving everyone deeper
into the pain of forgetting
our inherent joy of being.
