Coldest Mornings
The coldest mornings are the clearest,
the light brightest on the horizon.
A friend tells me this crisp weather makes her feel alive.
Me too, if only to keep warm.
My pain arrives at the appointed hour
on these chilly mornings.
Only one other person possibly shares it,
but I don’t know her any longer.
These feelings are too heavy for me alone.
So I sit on this bitter cold morning and add them to my poem,
or I go to a meeting and insert them into my conversation.
As I grow in strength and wisdom, divine alchemy makes them
love.
