Cats
Anyone who truly loves a cat
adores both the cuddly, purring fur ball,
and the unrepentant hunter-slaughterer
who’s always squinting in the shadows
through oblong, marble-like eyes.
A cat knows things about this world
we can only intuit faintly.
Think of what cats have taught you -
about gravity,
about tiny spaces,
about listening,
about the proportionate amount
of effort versus reward,
about the fine line
between sleep and wakefulness,
about play and the power of hallucinogens,
about loneliness and death.
Cats are yet another way
of knowing God.
