A Thanksgiving Prayer

You are loved and so are they.
There is no difference
between our giving and receiving.
The two are but equal parts of one breath.

The first Thanksgiving was the very act of creation.
You, and what you see all around you,
is love reflected in beautiful light.
The grace and dignity
which is inherent in all life is not given,
and therefore cannot be taken away.

Our Thanksgiving story is rooted in the founding of this country,
a story of Native Americans
sharing their harvest with Pilgrim immigrants
newly arrived to these shores.
As difficult as it must have been
to comprehend those stark differences in one another,
they chose to see and honor the true God within.

So as we prepare to enjoy this feast,
which gives us the light to shine
and the grace to reflect the goodness in all things,
we also thank those who went before us
and passed down these traditional rituals and eternal truths.
(A special thanks to the cooks too!)
Amen.
