A Speck of Truth

You may believe this world
has gone completely crazy.
Of course you wouldn’t be alone.
It’s no longer just the sensitive ones
who can feel and detect
the tortured soul of the collective
now run amok among us.
Everywhere are men and women
broken and twisted by Ponzi schemes,
grown fat and putrid by the prosperity gospel,
armed by the Second Amendment,
and fitted for a suicide vest by fundamentalism.

There is no longer any way
for enfeebled minds
to make sense of this world,
with its astounding diversity
and uncompromising complexity.
They simply don’t realize
they’re pointing the gun
at their own heads.

I don’t want to escape this time or place.
I am part of the present milieu.
Within the violence and turmoil
I detect optimism and creative energy.
Life and love will continue
in beings who remain
vulnerable and fragile.
