It begins with humility.
I wake in the night to offer this simple prayer: Lord, teach me to pray, how to offer my heart and my soul to you to know that I am heard. Then come morning I pray for an awakened faith, to believe when I have no evidence, to trust when I am not trustworthy, to let go when I think I am in control.
