The Point of No Return

People are busy devising plans
to reach Mars.
TO REACH MARS!!!
So there must be a big profit
for those arriving first.
Yet there’s no good reason.
Who needs a good reason?

An old Apollo Astronaut
sternly warns the nation
we should first return to the moon,
and build up an infrastructure there
before heading on to Mars.

Of all the human gifts,
among the most predictable
is losing our minds.
Alcohol, cocaine and sex
are all complicit accomplices,
but nothing motivates a man to insanity
like money and power.

Many men get lost in Asia,
others disappear in Africa
or in South America.
Some just go around the block
and are lost forever.

So resist taking a rocket to Mars.
When you go too far
you may never return.
I learned early on
not to climb a tree
from which I could not
climb back down.
