The Dark Mystery

I can turn the brightest day gray
with thoughts of imperfection,
how the world we create might be different,
might be kinder, more equitable for all.

I cannot deny what I see -
the poverty, greed, fear, the destruction,
and least of all when I look in the mirror,
the amazing darkness staring back at me.

I don’t even want to finish this thought,
lest the thought finish me,
lest I waste the wonderful sunshine,
lest my lover turn away.
