Take Great Cheer

Take cheer in this moment.
It’s a prelude to something other,
just as this day is the eve
of all the days to come.

It’s hard for me not to be optimistic.
I feel as though I’m at the symphony.
The musicians are carefully tuning
and will soon play the same chord,
just before this great hall
reverberates into silence.

My great expectations are now the ashes
of fires I set years ago.
My idea of finally becoming something greater
is now realized to be ever-becoming.
This life is a forever journey
through all time and space.

If you refuse to bend while you are green
you will one day become rigid,
and like a club carried in the hand
will seek someone to bludgeon.
