My Love

In that semi-lucid state
just before waking,
I see you,
I see me,
I feel our love completely.

We have yet to meet,
the both of us somewhere
not here,
not together,
yet already in love.

That love cannot possess is a given.
Love simply is -
in a small sense the redress for our loneliness,
in a larger sense life itself.

I have seen love beautiful and young
with such innocence it almost glows,
both soft and seductive,
absolutely irresistible to the senses,
yet as fragile as an infant.

I have marveled at love old and strong,
like the muddy stones of our gut-paved roads,
a rusty lantern showing the way forward
to weary pedestrians grizzled,
though still grinning.

Love is the sacred.
Love is our breath.
It is our blood,
the shared journey we take,
sometimes unwittingly
while feeling unworthy,
always unprepared,
until death.
Remember love can never be held too tightly.
It is eternal.
It is wise.
It is carried by the breeze.
It is a grace freely given
by sunlight,
by moonlight,
in a raindrop.
It abounds in life and death.

Though I do not yet know you by any distinct name,
and have not seen you with my feeble eyes
nor heard your voice so reassuring,
I recognize you for who you really are:
My Love.
