Music of Being
I hear and remember.
Three blocks away
I hear the tap-tap
of heavy machinery
pounding steel into place.
It reminds me of a story
in which the poet Rumi succumbs
to the ecstatic music of being
when he hears the tap-tap
of the goldsmith’s hammer.
Rumi spun
as I now spin,
unwinding the tight coil
of heavy thoughts
confining my being.
I spin and spin
out of control,
but held in balance
by the music of being.
