Search tips

Invite Favorable Spirits

Keep writing.
Get up and keep writing.
Put a pen in your hand
to commit your thoughts
and your feelings to paper.
Don’t forget to buy paper,
preferably a notebook.
Set the alarm clock.
Make some tea.
Wait as long as necessary
for words to amass
at the tip of your pen.
If possible find companions.
A dog or two, or a cat
will invite favorable spirits,
and may also warm your lap.
Write anywhere and everywhere.
There is no place lacking sanctity
enough for just one poem.
Keep doing this
even if it seems hopeless,
even if you find out
you’re not very good
and what comes out is tedious,
full of doubt,
full of brutal honesty,
full of everything that fills you
and of which you’d rather be empty.
Don’t flinch or falter.
Keep going,
keep digging,
keep writing.
Eventually you’ll tap an artery.
The blood will flow
and so will the love.
