In the Name of Love
I recall the year I turned 39, and the realization which came along with it of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, also at age 39. I was overcome at having lived in my body as long as such a towering figure. When I was born, scarcely five years had passed since that sad April day in Memphis. And there I was, just arriving in this world he so abruptly had to leave behind. From time to time I think about him, and about his wife and kids, about all the people he touched directly and indirectly. The profound wisdom and love which flowed through him and imbued his words with passion, compelled a peaceful action that forever changed a people. That I may know King’s legacy, is as sure a sign as any, of the Promised Land.
