Guiltless

I just want to lay
in a hammock today.
There’d be nothing at all
wrong with that -
no justification demanded,
no excuses needed,
and no reward redemptions required.

I’ve finally awoken
to what it means
to be alive and human.
That is,
what it means to fully recognize
my tiny and precious life,
and then to revel in it,
without any compulsion
to defend my being
or to resent yours.

Would that I could
always remain in my hammock.
And yet life is
no more this one aspect
than any another.

Difficult as it may be to let go,
the awesome thing about my life
is it is forever becoming
something else.
