It’s often something obvious which gives away the ending. Maybe I notice the tempo slowing right after the crescendo. Or it could be a little shrug from the first violinist. Either will prompt me to sit in my chair stiffly, elbows on my armrests, expecting those final notes. As I get up to leave I think about tomorrow and the tuning of the strings before the next song.
