Everything Belongs

Five men sit in a room
beneath a Lutheran church
on an ordinary Thursday night.

The chatter turns from this to that
and inevitably to money,
to the cost of living,
upon which
there can never be consensus
as to who must pay what.

So it goes
until the meeting starts,
when the men begin to speak
in a liminal space,
which demands an honesty
and a generosity
heretofore absent.

A consensus slowly develops
around their very being,
and so the energy shifts
until everything belongs.
