Buck Up!

Buck up!
You’ve already had a long life,
and there’s no reason
not to expect a few more years.
Some might argue this is when the fun begins,
or at the very least these are the years,
when you will be called into action,
to share all that learning stored
within those scars and gray hairs.

History is a fading thing.
It’s written from a tired perspective
that was cobbled together
from ancient texts,
and likely someone’s drunken memories.
So few people try to understand history.
Most prefer to wear it as a badge
or to use it as a bludgeon.

Now your time has come.
Speak experientially.
Be humble.
Recognize your limits.
Listen to others with your whole heart.
Most of all, don’t seek immortality.
