Brotherhood

Full is this morning
after spending several days
in the company of men
rediscovering old pathways to God.

Brotherhood
is just a word
until it is whispered
into a bowl of sacred water
or into Grandfather Fire,
and then wrenched out
of our heads, hearts and guts
through the Truth Mandala
in the bitter emotions
of anger, fear, shame,
emptiness and sorrow.

Humbly we walked.
Humbly we sang.
Humbly we blessed the ground,
while we also opened our hearts
to the blessings of our brothers
brought forth from other mothers.

We dreamed a new dream
of brotherhood restored,
and glimpsed a dawning age
of renewed masculinity.
