Boomers

What happened
to the softer people of my youth,
the ones weary of those elders,
who were always sticking
their heads in the sand.

I believed in you
as you pointed to the moon
and told me it was closer
than I could imagine.

I was just a child when we met,
but I knew then
as I know better now,
it’s the broken-hearted
who really know how to love;
the humbled travelers,
how to move through this world tenderly,
full of gratitude and compassion.

Eventually the rock gives way
to the wind and the rain.
So come back people of my youth,
the promises you made me
have yet to come true.
