Anywhere

...is so much better.

At night I hear echoes
of desperate voices
howling in the dark,
Love me just a little!
Love me just a little!

I’ve gotten so
when I take the dog out
right before my bedtime,
I don’t trust the stillness.

I much prefer
a moonless night,
the city lights illuminating
a gray ceiling of clouds
and driverless cars
pointing their headlights
down empty streets,
where everything familiar
becomes just a silhouette,
and the barking dogs
are those voices we ignore
when doubt begins
to corrode our faith
the sun will ever return.

So where am I going with this?
I’m going nowhere of course.
Nowhere is the place we all must go
before a new day will come
and reveal to us anywhere
is so much better.
