A Tenuous Order
Would you believe all of the electrical outlets inside my apartment are installed upside down? Management assures me this was an intentional decision, a safety feature for my protection. But it feels more like utter bullshit and the madness of an electrician with a dark sense of humor or a touch of dyslexia. The world I expect is a world with outlets which make sense— with the grounding wire located on the bottom, so that every plug fits and that everything works exactly as advertised. Can’t we all agree that order is more tenuous than the temperatures in April? Perhaps I’m being reminded that a poorly wired outlet could burn my building down, thus rearranging the cosmic order as I struggle to maintain everything in its right place with my words and expectations.
